Large-Print Psychoeducational Testing for Children: Visual Accommodations During Psychoeducational Evaluations

These materials are available through the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) for appropriate assessments.

Who May Benefit From Large-Print Testing?

Large-print testing may be helpful for children and adolescents who have difficulty accessing standard-sized print.

Consider discussing large-print testing when your child:

• Regularly uses large-print materials at school

• Has a visual condition that makes standard-sized print difficult to read

• Receives visual accommodations through an IEP or 504 Plan

• Becomes visually fatigued when reading standard print

• Needs to enlarge text on a tablet or computer

• Has been advised by an ophthalmologist or optometrist to use larger print

The need for large-print testing is considered individually. Having a visual diagnosis or wearing glasses does not automatically mean that a child needs large-print assessment materials.

What Types of Testing Can Be Provided in Large Print?

Depending on your child's needs and the purpose of the evaluation, large-print materials may be available for:

• Cognitive testing: Measures skills such as reasoning, problem-solving, working memory, and processing.

• Academic achievement testing: Measures skills such as reading, written language, and mathematics.

• Oral language testing: Provides information about aspects of a child's language abilities.

When appropriate materials are available for the measures needed, testing can be provided using paper-based large-print materials rather than relying solely on standard-sized electronic materials.

Why Does the Testing Format Matter?

A psychoeducational evaluation is designed to help parents understand how their child learns and identify areas of strength and difficulty.

When a child has difficulty seeing or accessing the assessment materials, the visual demands of testing can become an additional challenge. Providing appropriate access to the materials can help the child focus on the skills being evaluated rather than on the difficulty of viewing the test.

What Should Parents Do If Their Child Needs Large Print?

If your child uses large-print materials at school or has other visual accommodations, let the psychologist know when scheduling an evaluation.

It can also be helpful to share information about your child's visual needs or accommodations from their:

• Ophthalmologist

• Optometrist

• School team

• IEP or 504 Plan

• Teacher or ESE team

This information can help the psychologist determine what testing accommodations may be appropriate.
